Profile: Rep. Jim Guest, Co-chair of the UM Caucus

In addition to the excellent education he received at UM-Rolla, Guest also enjoyed participating in extracurricular activities. As a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, Guest has "many enjoyable memories."

"As anyone from UM-Rolla will say, the best times would have to be during Greek Week and St. Pat's weekend," he said.

Guest will have another reason to celebrate at this year's annual St. Pat's Celebration, when he will be inducted as an Honorary Knight of St. Patrick during coronation ceremonies at UM-Rolla March 18.

Guest was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 to represent the 5th District, part of DeKalb County and parts of Clinton, Buchanan and Gentry counties. He serves as chairman of the Fiscal Review Committee and as a member of the Workforce Development and Workforce Safety, Agriculture Policy, and Corrections and Public Institutions Committees.

In addition to his legislative duties, Guest is a farmer and small business owner. He has worked as an aerospace engineer in California and St. Louis, Mo. He is a member of the King City and Albany Chambers of Commerce, the Missouri Farm Bureau and the Missouri Cattleman's Association.

Among other honors, Guest is the recipient of the A.C. Burrows Award from the AMEC, the Master Pork Producer Award from the Missouri Park Association, and the 2004 National Legislator of the Year Award from the Marine Retailers Association of America.

As a co-chair of the UM Caucus, Guest feels it is a great opportunity to bring together a group with a common bond to hear about what is happening at the University of Missouri. "I hope it helps to foster a broader relationship and a common bond between the four campuses to work together to bring about positive changes for the future," he said.

The greatest policy issue facing the University of Missouri today, according to Guest, is the "need to expand our educational resources and promote new technologies."

Stable state support for higher education in the future is another priority for Guest and the caucus. "We need to be responsible stewards of the taxpayer's funds by demonstrating a focused, targeted approach to education," he said.
