St. Charles legislators visit local extension center

Sen. Chuck Gross (R-St. Charles), Rep. Carl Bearden (R-St. Charles) and Rep. Tom Dempsey (R-St. Charles) visited the St. Charles County University of Missouri Extension Center on Aug. 15 for an early morning breakfast session to hear about local extension programs and funding.

Bud Reber, East Central Region extension director, gave an overview of programs in the region, including FastTrac, a program for displaced workers who want to start their own businesses, and Dining with Diabetes. Ruth Mellor, longtime 4-H leader and family community education volunteer, discussed how extension has equipped her to be a better community leader. Jeff Halfaker, a grandfather raising two grandchildren, testified about the value of extension’s involvement in building a grandparenting network.

Interim Vice Provost and Director of Cooperative Extension Tom Henderson gave an overview of extension’s three-legged funding stool – county commissions, state appropriations and federal funds from USDA – plus multiple grants and contracts. These funds are used to deliver educational programs to more than one million Missourians statewide.
