Joint House-Senate committee begins hearings on higher education

The Joint Committee on Education, chaired by Sen. Charlie Shields (R-St. Joseph), held a hearing last week to gather input from several departments about how to strengthen and improve higher education in Missouri. The committee, which was at the forefront of developing a new funding formula for elementary and secondary education over the past two years, is now turning its focus to higher education and will pay particular attention to governance and how well colleges and universities are meeting needs of tomorrow’s workforce in the state.

The committee heard from department and governing board representatives from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Department of Economic Development, and the Department of Higher Education during the session.

Other committee members include Senators Matt Bartle (R-Lee’s Summit); Rob Mayer, (R-Dexter); Gary Nodler, (R-Joplin); Maida Coleman, (D-St. Louis); Rita Days, (D-St. Louis); and Yvonne Wilson, (D-Kansas City). House members include Reps. Brian Baker, (R-Belton); Bob Johnson, (R-Lee’s Summit); Ed Robb, (R-Columbia); Maynard Wallace, (R-Thornfield); Rachel Bringer, (D-Palmyra); Sharon Sanders Brooks, (D-Kansas City); and Michael Corcoran, (D-St. Ann).

The committee plans additional hearings this fall.
