Elected officials join new UMKC chancellor to celebrate capital campaign

Rep. Sharon Sanders Brooks (D-Kansas City) and Rep. Leonard Hughes (D-Kansas City) attended the Your UMKC alumni capital campaign reception on Thursday, Jan. 12, at Municipal Auditorium. “I was glad to see the level of support the Kansas City community has shared with the University,” Brooks said. The representatives were among hundreds of UMKC alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students who gathered to celebrate the progress to date of the Your UMKC fundraising campaign and rally for its finish in the months ahead. The occasion also marked Chancellor Guy Bailey’s first public appearance since he began his tenure at UMKC.

In a pre-game reception, campaign guests learned Your UMKC has raised an unprecedented $152 million toward its $200 million goal. This milestone marks the largest amount of private funds contributed to the campus. Campaign commitments already have created scholarships, established top faculty positions, produced distinctive facilities and helped select programs to achieve overall excellence.

Your UMKC served as the title sponsor for the subsequent men’s basketball game against conference rival IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis). Fans were treated to a special halftime recognition ceremony for key campaign leaders and watched Campaign Co-Chairs Terry Dunn (M.B.A. ’73) and Peggy Dunn (B.A. ’72), along with Honorary Campaign Co-Chair Jeannette Nichols, toss out the first ball.
