Board Chair Walsworth visits lawmakers as Senate begins work on omnibus higher education bill

Walsworth visits with Rep. Gayle Kingery (R-Poplar Bluff), chair of the House Higher Education Committee. Kingery’s committee will likely handle the omnibus bill when it comes over from the Senate.

University of Missouri Board of Curators Chair Don Walsworth visited Jefferson City on Monday, Feb.12, to make the rounds with legislative leaders as the Senate prepared to take up SB389, the omnibus higher education bill. Walsworth met with legislative leaders in both the House and Senate to discuss the board’s support for the legislation.

Sen. Gary Nodler (R-Joplin), sponsor of the bill, introduced a Senate Committee Substitute on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and began debate on the measure, which includes the Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative capital projects, additional scholarship funding, tuition restraint language, and other governance issues for higher education. Nodler introduced the first amendment to the substitute on Tuesday that would restore six life sciences projects into the bill, including five projects on University of Missouri campuses. Debate is expected to continue this week on the Senate floor. Additional details will be provided in Friday’s Legislative Update.
