Human Capital Planning takes shape

On July 31, Ron Guerzon, a consultant working on the COMPASS project, gave a technical introduction to members of the COMPASS project team on the second stage of Hyperion - Human Capital Planning (HCP). The purpose of HCP is to introduce system-wide budgeting by position and create new reporting for strategic planning. HCP’s focus is on compensation, allowing departments to budget for salaries and benefits by employee and position. The data within HCP is pulled from PeopleSoft Human Resources for budgeting purposes. However, where Hyperion FIN is driven by account code or chartfield string, HCP is driven by position or employee.

At this point in time, the application is still undergoing development and the team is making decisions concerning data loads and functionality. The immediate goals are to focus on what adds value, provide the best data possible for users, and give users the necessary tools to make decisions as easily as possible. A follow up demonstration of the application will occur in approximately five weeks, and selection of a pilot group for the testing and utilization of HCP is currently underway.


Training Update

Hyperion FIN training and PeopleSoft Budget Maintenance training are in full swing! The campus budget officers have implemented the training plans they developed in July and are training users at all four campuses and UM System. The training sessions include: Overview, Navigation, Budget Maintenance, Reporting – Data Warehouse, Reporting – Hyperion Workspace, and Budget Management – Forecast Tool. In addition, training materials for budget variance reports are now available online.

As FIN training rolls out, the next step will be to finalize the remaining FIN training materials and look towards developing Long Range Planning and Human Capital Planning training materials and training plans. For more information about when these will be rolling out, view the project timeline.

What else is going on?

COMPASS is a large project that touches many areas within the UM System. While big steps are being made in the areas of HCP, FIN, and training, the following is also underway by a variety of groups in support of COMPASS:

  • Monthly newsletter delivered. To sign up, send an email to compass@umsystem.edu.
  • Revised S&W Account Spreadsheet sent to further assist in the account conversion.
  • Position Clean Up continues and is on track by Human Resources departments
  • COMPASS website updated.

The project team has been working hard since your last issue of COMPASS Roadmap. Of the many milestones reached in the last two weeks, here is a sample:

  • Started training on all campuses.
  • Support framework was finalized and agreed upon by all parties.
  • HCP technical introduction took place.
  • HCP project schedule was firmed up and work has begun.
