Dr. ZhiQiang Chen joined the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2010. Chen received a Ph.D. in structural engineering from University of California, San Diego in 2009, where he completed his cross-disciplinary dissertation titled "Identifying Structural Damage from Images." Prior to joining UMKC, he conducted research in nonlinear soil-structure simulation, geotechnical centrifuge modeling, and system identification as a postdoctoral researcher at UCSD. At UMKC, Chen and his research group (http://lasir.umkc.edu) dedicate to discovering knowledge from complex interactions in constructed structures and developing advanced imaging and computing methodologies for assessing disaster-induced built environment losses. Chen also has interest in applying building information modeling (BIM) in sustainable energy research. Chen currently teaches / is planning to teach courses in structural engineering and computer engineering, including structural analysis, structural dynamics, advanced engineering mathematics, and advanced image understanding.
