Cathy Newman Thomas is an assistant professor in the Department of Special Education in the College of Education at the University of Missouri. She earned a doctorate in special education with a specialization in learning disabilities and behavior disorders from The University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Her research agenda focuses on the use of multimedia learning theory to guide development and implementation of learning technologies in preservice teacher education, inservice professional development, and for students with and at risk for disabilities. She is interested in developing and identifying evidence-based practices to enhance teacher knowledge and skills and to improve academic and behavioral outcomes for students with and at risk for disabilities. Thomas teaches required undergraduate teacher education course work about special education law and procedures, characteristics of disability, inclusive practices, and behavior management. She is active in service, for example, serving as editor for the Council for Learning Disabilities newsletter, LD Forum, and chairing the College of Education Diversity Committee.
