Intellectual Property Administration
The pursuit of scientific discovery through research is critical to furthering the economic development mission of the University of Missouri. The Office of Intellectual Property Administration (OIPA) supports the economic development mission by encouraging broad practical application of university research for the public benefit; assisting those associated with the technology transfer program with evaluating, protecting, licensing and commercializing university discoveries; and carrying out new economic development initiatives designed to create jobs in Missouri.
Reporting directly to the UM System Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (EVPAA), the Office of Intellectual Property Administration serves as the System component of the university’s technology transfer program. OIPA establishes System-wide policies and procedures, develops standard forms and agreements, and supports the campus technology transfer offices (TTO) through the following activities:
- Funding for patent applications
- In-house provisional patent application preparation and filing
- Market analyses of university intellectual property
- Data management
- Policy analysis and development
- Administrative support
OIPA is also an advisor to the EVPAA and campus TTOs on issues related to intellectual property management and University intellectual property policies and procedures.
While OIPA is the System component of the university’s technology transfer operation, each campus of the University of Missouri has an independent office that serves as the focal point for entrepreneurship, economic development and technology transfer in their local area. Each campus office is responsible for invention disclosure management, licensing, and business development on their respective campus.
