Past Legislative Successes:
ASUM can boast about many legislative successes through the years. The following is a partial list of successes.
- 1975 The UM System Board of Curators officially chartered ASUM
- 1977 Legislation giving 18 year olds the right to consent to medical treatment
- 1984 Placement of a non-voting student representative on Board of Curators and Regents in public universities in the state
- 1986 Bright Flight Scholarship, Greek tax reassessment, foreign teaching assistant legislation signed into law
- 1987 Annual Student Lobby Day (Student Showcase) began
- 1988 UMKC became associate member campus of ASUM
- 1989 Information to Congress on reauthorization of higher education act
- 1989 First ASUM National Issues Director
- 1992 7,000 students were registered to vote through ASUM; hundreds of thousands of students have been registered to vote over the past 30 years due to ASUM
- 1992 Ambassador program started at MU
- 1995 At MU, 790 absentee ballots were notarized through ASUM
- 1995 Legislation to increase the penalty for hazing
- 1999 Allowance for Student Curator to attend closed meetings
- 1999 UMSL became associate member campus of ASUM
- 2001 Loan forgiveness program that provides incentives for teachers and medical and veterinary doctors to work in high-demand areas of Missouri.
- 2005 Student Curator Vote (HB 440 passed the House by vote of 117-32)
- 2005 Federal Legislative Internship established and first intern serves in Washington D.C.
- 2007 Student Curator Vote (SB 106 passed the Senate unanimously)
- 2007 Bright Flight Scholarship was amended to SB389 which increased the scholarship for the first time since 1986
