A Letter from the Senior Vice President for
Academic Affairs

It is my pleasure to announce the University of Missouri New Faculty Teaching Scholars (NFTS) program for 2007-2008. This exciting UM program for new facultynow in its seventh yearhas been highly regarded by participants from the past six years.

The NFTS program is designed to support faculty as they adjust to their new academic responsibilities and environments, to introduce them to innovative teaching methods, and to build collegiality. The program is dedicated to promoting the success of new faculty by providing support through conferences, retreats and monthly forums.

Effective teaching and learning is a cornerstone of the NFTS program. Participants will review research on learning and find out how to use a variety of college teaching methods, technology, and other tools to create engaged learning environments. My experience has shown that, without critical reflection and analysis, we tend to teach using the methods we experienced as learners. The NFTS program focuses on breaking this cycle by helping faculty members gain the knowledge and skills to help them create more effective learning environments for students in their courses.

Another crucial focus of the NFTS program is increasing faculty retention and productivity by building collegial relationships. Research shows that new faculty often find that life in academe is fragmented and isolating and cite these reasons for leaving an institution. NFTS alumni indicate that the NFTS program helped them form teaching and research alliances that create a sense of belonging and foster opportunities for collaboration.

Giving and receiving feedback from colleagues also is an integral part of the NFTS program. Participants will have the chance to create a supportive and reflective community of scholars committed to sustaining the development of a "culture of teaching" on each campus at the University of Missouri.

The New Faculty Teaching Scholars program is a truly innovative and exciting effort. I encourage you to participate or nominate a new faculty member. If you have questions about the nomination process or the New Faculty Teaching Scholars program, please contact the program director on your campus.

Sincerely,
