These guidelines should be followed to determine the proper identification to be used when referring to the University of Missouri, any of the campuses or system administration.
References to Statewide, 4-Campus University of Missouri
Initially Use:
- University of Missouri System
Thereafter Use:
- University System, or UM System
References to a Campus
Initially Use:
- University of Missouri-Columbia
- University of Missouri-Kansas City
- University of Missouri-Rolla
- University of Missouri-St. Louis
Thereafter Use:
- UM-Columbia, Columbia campus, UMC or MU
- UM-Kansas City, Kansas City campus or UMKC
- UM-Rolla, Rolla campus or UMR
- UM-St. Louis, St. Louis campus or UMSL
References In Sports Releases
The campus symbol (mascot) may be used with the appropriate campus reference.
In addition, the following may be used:
- Missouri Tigers, Mizzou (Columbia)
- Missouri Kangaroos (Kansas City)
- Missouri Miners (Rolla)
- Missouri Rivermen/Riverwomen (St. Louis)
References to System Administration
Initially Use:
- University of Missouri System
Thereafter Use:
- University System or UM System
NOTE: University of Missouri System and UM System include the Office of the President and staff, University Extension, research not administered by campus, non-campus administrative units and support services for the entire System.
Terms Not to be Used
- MU as a reference to the University System or any of its campuses except
Columbia.- University Wide (UW)
- UMca
Use of University Name in Advertising
The University shall not be used for commercial or promotional advertising purposes, nor will the name of the University be identified in any way with the aims, policies, programs, products, or opinions of any organization or its members.
An exception may be made by the President of the University System. When an exception is made, the conditions for using the name will be prescribed.
Standards governing the use of the University seal are detailed in the document, Guidelines for Display of the Official Seal of the University of Missouri, approved by the Board of Curators in July 1996, which is available from the campus publications office, the UM System Office of University Relations, and on the internet.
