The self-insured Auto and General Liability plan provides coverage for bodily injury or property damage liability arising out of the operation or use of University-owned or operated vehicles. The plan also provides coverage for bodily injury or property damage liability arising from ownership or use of buildings or premises and/or legal liability arising from University operations.
Covered under this program are all University officers, agents, employees, authorized volunteers, and authorized students.
All claims for vehicle and general liability against the University should be handled as stated in BP 705 Accidents-Vehicle, BP 706 Accidents-Rented Vehicles, and BP 707 Students & General Public (Except Vehicle Accidents) regarding reporting of accidents.
The first $500 claim cost of any vehicular loss is the responsibility of the University department whose employee, volunteer, or student caused the loss.
Personal Vehicles
- Liability Insurance
In the event of an accident resulting in liability while driving a personally owned vehicle on University business, the University's coverage is secondary to the coverage of the owner/employee. The University's coverage will only become involved after the employee's limits have been exhausted.
The University recommends that employees using personally owned vehicles for business maintain personal automobile policies with a minimum of $300,000 combined single unit.
- Physical Damage (Comp & Collision)
The University will not be responsible for damage to personally owned vehicles used in business and recommends that the employee arrange for physical damage insurance if desired!
Any individual who rents a vehicle contractually assumes liability for any loss or damage to the vehicle regardless of fault. Although car rental companies will provide collision damage liability waiver coverage (CDW/LDW) for a daily fee, University policy requires that this coverage be declined, except under the following circumstances:
For vehicles rented for official business purposes, collision damage liability coverage is automatically provided either by the University's self-insured program or by MasterCard if the vehicle was rented using a University-sponsored MasterCard charge card.
All accidents involving rented vehicles are reported in accordance with the procedure established for reporting accidents involving University-owned vehicles (BP 706.)
This program provides coverage for damage resulting from comprehensive (fire, wind, theft, etc.) and/or collision exposures on vehicles owned or leased by the University. Participation is voluntary except for those vehicles that require comprehensive/collision coverage as a condition of a purchase or lease contract. Annual premium assessments are based on the value of the vehicle being insured.
Coverage under the plan is afforded to University employees and recognized volunteers as well as enrolled students pursuing courses of instruction at or under the direction or auspices of a participating medical facility.
The plan provides protection against claims resulting from injury to a patient arising out of the operations of a participating medical facility or because of injury arising out of the rendering of or failure to render professional services by a covered person, performed in the practice of the covered person's profession.
This program is administered internally by UM Management Services staff and the UM Office of the General Counsel. Units currently covered under this self-insurance program are:

Workers' compensation is a statutorily-required program directed toward compensating employees who sustain work-related injuries. This program provides for the payment of medical expenses and compensation to any employee who is either injured in a work-related accident or incurs an occupational disease. Persons covered under this program include full and part-time employees, as well as students while in an employment status, and recognized volunteers.
The determination as to whether medical expenses and compensation are payable and the amount and duration of such payments is prescribed by state statutes and not by University policy.
