Disaster Prevention/Recovery

Guide for Developing a Disaster Plan

Part A: Basic Concepts And Prerequisites

The first element in formulating a records disaster prevention and recovery plan is a clear understanding of disasters themselves - their types, causes, and effects. A plan tailored to your needs can only be accomplished by a team or committee, or someone hired from outside to come in and study your operation. We, who gather information concerning the contents of any particular disaster plan, can only speculate as to what will or will not actually be needed in your department's plan. Completion of the study is easier when members of your department are involved in all stages of writing the plan. A plan based on anything other than your needs will result in a weak, costly plan that does not meet the criteria of effectiveness and efficiency.
