Educational Assistance Program

Under this program, all regular employees (expected to work at least 75% FTE with an indicated appointment duration of at least six months and regularly scheduled to work a minimum average of 30 hours per week) may enroll for not more than six credit hours per semester (maximum of three hours during summer session or intersession) in college level credit courses. Employees appointed on a full-time nine-month basis may enroll for not more than the maximum number of hours allowed by the employee's home campus during the summer session, provided they do not hold an appointment for the summer period.

Eligibility for the program is extended to staff retired under the University retirement program, but not to staff on unpaid leave of absence, students or staff in positions considered to be student employment including but not limited to Graduate Teaching Assistants, Graduate Research Assistants, Graduate Instructors, and Student Assistants. 15 Semester Credit Hours per Academic Year is the maximum allowed under this program.

 

All Employees

  1. Shall be permitted to receive college credit for courses taken providing the courses are within the regulations of the University of Missouri.
  2. Will pay 25% of the normal Educational Fee when enrolling with the intention of receiving academic credit for the course(s). The employee will pay the normal amount of all other fees. The Educational Fee is not required if the employee audits courses (except through Center for Independent Study and MU Direct: Continuing and Distance Learning).
  3. Provided class space is available, the Educational and Student Activity Fees are not required for any eligible retired staff member registering for any courses above the secondary level, except for courses from the Center for dependent Study and MU Direct: Continuing and Distance Learning.
  4. Must file an application to enroll with the Director of Admissions and Registrar, meet student admission requirements and remain a University of Missouri employee through the end of the course(s) in which enrolled.

 

Teaching and Research Employees

Prior to registering each semester, the employee must complete the Employee Section of the Authorization for Educational Assistance Form (UM84-1), have the form approved by the department chair or dean of the school or division where he/ she is employed (Department Section). The form must be sent to the Human Resources Office at the campus for verification.

 

Administrative, Service and Support Employees

  1. Immediately prior to registering, the employee must have completed a six-month period of continuous employment. If the course work is part of required job training for the work to be done by the employee, the six-month employment requirement may be waived.
  2. The course(s) must be taken outside scheduled working hours, or an equivalent adjustment must be made in the employee's work schedule to make up the time away from work, or an equivalent adjustment must be made in the employee's pay or the time away from work must be deducted from the employee's vacation.
  3. When an employee is requested by the department head to enroll in a course(s) which is (are) directly related to his/her assigned University responsibilities, the time away from work to attend classes shall be considered as part of his/her regular work schedule. Class attendance shall not take priority over the work to be performed.
  4. Prior to registering each semester, the employee must complete the Employee Section of the Authorization for Educational Assistance Form (UM84-1) and have the form approved by the department head, dean or director where he/she is employed (Department Section). The form must be sent to the Human Resources Office at the campus for verification.

 

Retirees

Prior to registering each semester, the retiree must complete the Employee Section of the Authorization for Educational Assistance Form (UM84-1) and submit the form to the Campus Benefits Representative for signature approval.
