Pay Range Abbreviations and Definitions

Short Description Long Description Explanation of Range
A/PAdministrative/ ProfessionalRanges priced based on internal job evaluation plan being used, often due to lack of acceptable Market Data for the title. Ranges are annually reviewed and sometimes changed (in unison) by a fixed percentage. Grade assignment for titles does not change unless there is a significant change in job content.
E Exempt Ranges for jobs priced using acceptable market data. Titles in these ranges are regionally/nationally priced. Dollar values for ranges remain constant while job titles are reassigned to new ranges as market data supports.
S/M Service/ Maintenance Ranges are a service-in-grade system for union titles. Progression is based on employee service time with the university and service time in the title. Dollar values are annually reviewed and sometimes changed (in unison) following budget guidelines for the fiscal year. (Formerly known as “H” ranges.)
S/MA Service/ Maintenance – AbbreviatedS/M ranges developed with a limited number of steps for job titles needing to be at competitive rates upon employment.
(For use ONLY at UM-Columbia Campus, Hospital, and St. Louis Campus.)
S/MC Service/ Maintenance – CustodianS/M ranges developed 8/26/07 to deliver an additional increase to Custodians, Stock Clerks, and Linen Attendants on the fourth step. The intent was to continue to reduce the gap between the current and grandfathered ranges for these titles.

S/MF Service/ Maintenance – Food ServiceS/M ranges developed 8/26/07 to deliver an additional market valuation adjustment to Food Service Workers (I, II, III, and IV), Snack Bar Attendants, and Cooks.

S/MG Service/ Maintenance – Grandfathered S/M ranges “grandfathered” for employees hired into these titles before 8/30/1992. Employees hired after this date were assigned to rates on the S/M range that reflected lower market values for the time. The titles are entry-level service jobs. Very few titles are assigned to S/MG and no additional titles will be assigned to these ranges.
(Formerly referred to as "HH" ranges.)

S/MJ Service/ Maintenance – Missourian S/M ranges developed for use by titles at the Missourian (Presses).  Titles originally shared S/MA grades with Mechanical Trades Specialist (MTS) titles.  MTS titles received an additional market valuation adjustment that was not extended to press titles; creating the need for a new range group (S/MJ).
(For use ONLY at UM-Columbia Campus.)
S/MP Service/ Maintenance – Power Plant S/M ranges developed for use by titles at the power plant.  Titles originally shared S/M grades with Mechanical Trades Specialist (MTS) titles.  MTS titles received an additional market valuation adjustment that was not extended to power plant titles; creating the need for a new range group (S/MP).

TCH/OFC Technical/Office Ranges for non-exempt, non-union titles. Job titles in this group are priced to the local labor market of individual campuses. (Formerly referred to as “M” ranges).
T&R Teaching & Research Unclassified teaching and research titles including all faculty titles.
UNC Unclassified By Board regulations, all titles except those designated as T&R and select executive titles must be classified and assigned to pay ranges.  Titles not assigned to a pay range are considered unclassified (including T&R titles).
