Staff Handbook

 

This portion of your Staff Handbook describes some of the recreational and leisure activities available to you as a university employee. Most of the programs are relatively inexpensive and fun. We hope that your participation in some of these activities will make your association with the university more enjoyable.

There are literally hundreds of programs, events and activities throughout the university that are available to you as an employee. Your handbook is designed to identify some of the possibilities that are available to all employees, whether employed in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, St. Louis or elsewhere. We encourage you to explore additional available opportunities by contacting Human Resource Services. Presentation of your university ID card is required for most of the activities.

 

 

Recreational Facilities

 
Columbia

MU Student Recreation Complex: The complex features four facilities under one roof (Mizzou Aquatic Center, Rothwell Gymnasium, Brewer Fieldhouse and Student Rec. Addition) and is located in the center of campus at Hitt and Rollins streets. Fully funded by student recreation activity fees, the complex was renovated and expanded in 2005 and has redefined state-of-the-art recreation. Faculty and staff are eligible for a number of attractive non-student membership programs.

Hearnes Center: The Hearnes Center is open for "free play" by faculty, staff and students. The hours vary from week to week due to inter-collegiate sporting events and entertainment program priorities.

A.L. Gustin Golf Course: This 18-hole golf course is available for use by faculty, staff and the general public. The course is open year round, weather permitting. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. until dark. Reduced greens fees are available for faculty, staff and students with a MU ID. The course features tournaments for faculty and staff.

The Health Connection: THC is a health and wellness center serving the adult and senior population. Directed under the MU School of Health Professions, it also serves as a research facility. THC offers a wide variety of group fitness classes, a full gym, massage therapy, flu shots, travel vaccinations and monthly cholesterol screenings. It is open to the public and offers discounts to MU employees and retirees. Conveniently located on the Stephens College Campus in Hillcrest Hall, 1507 E. Broadway, free parking is available. Kansas City

Swinney Recreation Center: For a membership fee (available for payroll deduction), staff and faculty may use the following facilities seven days a week: Olympic-style, six-lane, indoor/outdoor swimming pool; a 1/8-mile indoor, banked running track; four handball/racquetball courts; one squash court; sauna and steam rooms; fully equipped fitness center with cardiovascular machines, machined and free weights; and five gymnasia. SRC's Health and Wellness Center includes the state-of-the-art Kinesis Techno-gym and Bod Pod body mass measurement system. Other amenities, such as upscale locker rooms, massage therapy, aerobics/fitness classes and personalized fitness training sessions, are available for additional fees.

 

Rolla

Gale Bullman Multipurpose Building: University employees may enjoy the recreational facilities at the Gale Bullman Multipurpose Building. All facilities are reserved for employees from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays. Contact the campus Athletic Department for additional information.

 

St. Louis

Mark Twain Building: A wide range of recreational activities and programs are available in this complex. You may use the facilities when they are not scheduled for classes, intramural games or other events. For information about the availability of the facility, call the campus Athletic Department or the information desk at the University Center.

Plays, Musicals and Concerts

 
Columbia

Corner Playhouse: Located at Hitt Street and University Avenue, the Corner Playhouse presents progressive and classical student productions. Consult the campus newspapers or call the Corner Playhouse for additional information.

Rhynsburger Theatre: Named after Donovan Rhynsburger, MU's principal theatre for dramatic productions is in the Fine Arts Building at Hitt Street and University Avenue. The 278-seat proscenium theatre also houses faculty offices, classrooms, shops, dressing rooms and other production support spaces. Faculty and staff receive a discount on tickets, which can be obtained from the box office in the lobby.

Concert Series: For excellence in the performing arts, the MU Concert Series offers a cross section of the fine arts and popular entertainment unparalleled in central Missouri. The depth and breadth of programming include the best of Broadway, jazz and stand-up comedy, as well as outstanding performances by orchestras, dance, opera and internationally famous artists. MSA Pop Concerts: Pop concerts featuring big-name talent are brought to the university by the Missouri Students Association. These concerts are usually held at the Hearnes Center, Livestock Pavilion or Jesse Auditorium. Tickets may be purchased at the MSA ticket window located in Brady Commons.

Classical Concerts: Symphonic, chamber music, soloists, mime and dance productions are presented periodically on campus through MSA. Tickets are available at the MSA ticket window located in Brady Commons. Summer concerts are outdoors on the Quadrangle.

Blues, Jazz and Folk Concerts: These concerts involve the style of music that is not covered under the classical or pop area. Tickets are available at the MSA ticket window in Brady Commons.

The Amphitheater at Mizzou: Located on the southwest corner of Faurot Field, the Amphitheater enables spectators to enjoy summer programs in a unique venue on the MU campus. The venue's capacity of 5,500 offers an intimate environment that allows for spectacular views to featured performances.

Hearnes Center: Along with hosting MU sporting events, the Hearnes Center also hosts various concerts, trade and consumer shows, and numerous entertainment events.

 

Kansas City

UMKC Theatre: You may enjoy exciting main stage and experimental theatre productions by the Department of Theatre-UMKC Theatre, as well as musicals and operas jointly produced by the department and the Conservatory of Music. These productions are held throughout the year at various theatres including the Helen F. Spencer Theatre and the studio theatre at the Center for the Performing Arts located at 4949 Cherry Street. Tickets are available through the Central Ticket Office, main lobby of the Center for the Performing Arts.

Kansas City Repertory Theatre: The nationally-renowned professional acting company offers six to seven professional productions throughout the year. The Rep performs in two locations, the Helen F. Spencer Theatre in the Center for Performing Arts at 4949 Cherry Street and Copaken Stage at 13th and Walnut. Discounted season and individual tickets are available to university employees through the Central Ticket Office, main lobby of the Center for the Performing Arts, or by calling 816-235-2700.

Conservatory of Music: The Center for the Performing Arts houses musical events throughout the year. All conservatory-sponsored concerts and recitals are free to UMKC faculty, staff and students with UMKC or student ID, except for fundraising events, Signature Series and Wylliams/Henry Dance. University employees will receive one free ticket; conservatory employees will receive two free tickets. For reservations and tickets, contact the UMKC Central Ticket Office, main lobby, or the Center for the Performing Arts.

 

Rolla

UMR Theatre Program: Theatrical productions are scheduled during the school year. The plays and musical stage productions are normally staged in Castleman Hall. There is usually a small admission charge.

UMR Musical Groups: Student musical groups include eight instrumental and two vocal groups. Student musical events are scheduled throughout the year, and most productions have a minimal charge. Leach Theatre, on the corner of 10th and Main streets, houses a variety of performances from university music and theater events to touring companies, Broadway musicals, and classical and modern music and dance events.

The Campus Performing Arts Series: This series brings internationally acclaimed musicians and dramatic productions to campus.

The Remmers Special Artist/Lecture Series: This series provides programs by nationally and internationally prominent personalities. Contact the campus office of public relations for information on these and other events.

St. Patrick's Day: The St. Pat's celebration is held annually on the weekend nearest St. Patrick's Day. During the week prior to the weekend celebration, there are many interesting contests. On Saturday, Rolla hosts a St. Pat's parade. All events, except the concert, are free to university employees.

 

St. Louis

Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center: The arts center offers a wide range of performance events: university music, theater and dance events, popular performers, touring theater, Broadway musicals, comedians and classical music artists.

Theatrical Productions: The University Players perform at least two full length plays a year. Dramatic readings, one-act plays and other dramatic programs are also produced. Productions are normally staged in Benton Hall. Contact the information desk at the University Center for additional information.

Musical Productions: During the school year, music recitals are performed by faculty, students and guest performers. These recitals are normally scheduled in Clark Hall. The University Singers, Orchestra, Band and Jazz Ensemble also perform concerts throughout the year. Concerts are normally scheduled for the J.C. Penney Auditorium. Contact the information desk at the University Center for current information.

Galleries

The University of Missouri provides you with many interesting, educational and entertaining activities. Some of the places of interest on or near each campus are identified and described for you in the following sections. Many forms of art are displayed regularly throughout the University of Missouri in one of its many galleries. The following is only a partial list of galleries, including location and types of exhibits.

 

Columbia

George Caleb Bingham Gallery: Located in the MU Fine Arts Building at Hitt Street and University Avenue, this gallery features contemporary exhibitions of visiting artists and faculty and student work from MU and other college campuses. State Historical Society of Missouri Gallery: Located on the ground floor, east wing of MU Ellis Library, this gallery features rotating exhibitions of works by Missouri and Missouri-related artists as well as permanent displays of selected artworks by George Caleb Bingham and Thomas Hart Benton. The gallery is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

MSA/GPC Craft Studio and Brady Gallery: Located on the second floor of Brady Commons, this offering operates as an educational and recreational facility by promoting the visual arts through workshops, exhibitions, individual access to studio space and joint programming with other university departments and the community. The Brady Gallery features exhibits by MU students, local and nationally-known artists, in addition to annual juried shows.

Rogers Gallery: Exhibits in architecture and interior design created by Architectural Studies faculty and students and related professionals are on display in the first floor of Stanley Hall. Exhibits contain two- and three dimensional work. For more information, visit http://arch.missouri.edu.

 

Kansas City

The UMKC Art Gallery: Located in the Fine Arts Building, the gallery displays a continually-changing art exhibit.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is not part of the UMKC campus, but is located about four blocks from the campus at 45th and Oak. The Nelson has one of the finest permanent collections of Oriental art in the country. In addition, the gallery displays Impressionist paintings, contemporary art, Renaissance and Baroque paintings, English pottery and many other interesting exhibits.

 

St. Louis

The Center for Metropolitan Studies: The Center for Metropolitan Studies, located in the Social Science and Business Building, features photography exhibits.

Campus Exhibits: Approximately 25 exhibit cases are located on the UMSL campus that contain rotating educational displays. Materials from the UMSL collection are often exhibited, as well as items of interest pertaining to faculty research, student work or community issues.

Gallery 210: Located in Lucas Hall and administered by the Department of Art and Art History, Gallery 210 offers exhibitions and visual arts programming of regional, national and international significance that would otherwise not be shown in the St. Louis area. The gallery's exhibitions support the education mission of the university.

Gallery FAB: Located in the Fine Arts building at the corner of Florissant Road and Rosedale, Gallery FAB is administered by the Department of Art and Art History. The gallery exhibits the work of local artists and students.

Museums

If you enjoy nostalgia, the university has much to offer you in the way of museum pieces. Whether your interest is art, fossils or insects, there is a museum listed here that will probably satisfy your interest.

 

Columbia

Museum of Anthropology: The focus of the museum's exhibits is Missouri archaeology and Native American ethnographic materials, including the Arctic, Northwest, Southwest, Plains and Great Basin. These exhibits chronicle the richness and diversity of Native American cultures throughout the U.S. The museum also is home to the largest archery collection in the world. The museum is located in 100 Swallow Hall and can be found online at http://anthromuseum.missouri.edu/default.shtm.

Museum of Art and Archaeology: The third largest art collection in Missouri, and the only accredited museum in the university system, includes artworks from the ancient world, European and American works from the early Middle Ages to the present - including a Samuel H. Kress Study Collection of important paintings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods - as well as Asian, African, Pre-Columbian and Oceanic art. The museum is located in Pickard Hall on the Francis Quadrangle.

Botany Greenhouses: A collection of living tropical and desert plants from around the world are exhibited at the Botany Greenhouse connected to Tucker Hall.

 

Kansas City

UMKC Geosciences Museum: Located in 271 Flarsheim Hall, the UMKC Geosciences Museum is free and open to the public. Since 1972, the Department of Geosciences has exhibited thousands of rare specimens of minerals, gems, ores and fossils in the museum.

The Toy and Miniature Museum: The museum exhibits antique toys from the 19th and 20th centuries and one of the finest scale miniature collections in the world. Kids of all ages will be amazed and delighted. Visit http://www.toyandminiaturemuseum.org.

 

Rolla

The UMR Minerals Collection: The collection, located in McNutt Hall, is an outgrowth of an exhibit at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis and now includes almost 3,500 specimens from throughout the world.

 

St. Louis

The Saint Louis Art Museum: Located in Forest Park, a short Metro ride from campus, the Saint Louis Art Museum has close programmatic ties to the St. Louis campus. The museum has world-renowned holdings in the areas of Pre-Columbian and Oceanic art. The museum's collections are also strong in American, Baroque, 19th-century European, Asian and 20th-century paintings, sculpture and photography.

Libraries

Your university identification card may be used to check out books at any of the University of Missouri libraries.

 

Columbia

All employees are extended borrowing privileges and access to electronic resources at the University Libraries, which include the health sciences, veterinary medicine, journalism, engineering, geology, and mathematical sciences libraries. Ellis Library, the main library, is located on Lowry Mall. With a collection of more than three million volumes, the MU Libraries are an excellent source of information for almost any subject.

Employees may borrow materials from the MU Law Library, one of the largest in the state, which is housed in Hulston Hall. The library's holdings include the federal and state statutory and case laws materials, special collections in foreign and international law and the John D. Lawson Library of Criminal Law and Criminology.

The State Historical Society of Missouri, located in the lower east end of Ellis Library, has a vast collection of manuscripts, census data, newspapers, maps and other reference materials. The society's art collection includes works by George Caleb Bingham, Thomas Hart Benton and Karl Bodmer, and many more renowned Missouri artists.

 

Kansas City

The UMKC libraries provide a full range of information services, including photocopying and printing, at four locations: the Miller Nichols; Health Sciences; Dental and Law libraries. Visit http://www.umkc.edu/library.

 

Rolla

All employees may borrow materials from the Missouri S&T library and make use of the many other services and resources that the library has to offer. The library is known for its strong collection in science and technology. In recent years, the material in social sciences and humanities has grown to support interest and programs in these areas, as well. The collection consists of more than 500,000 items, including books, journals and audiovisual materials. The library also provides more than 20,000 electronic journals, as well as electronic books and a variety of databases, all of which are available via the campus computer network. In the library's Multimedia Center, users are able to manipulate graphics, animation, sound and still and moving pictures to create multimedia presentations. The library also provides poster printing and lamination services for a nominal fee.

 

St. Louis

The Thomas Jefferson Library, on the main campus, and the Ward E. Barnes Education and the Health Sciences Libraries, at the South Campus Complex, are open during regular session. The collections of the libraries consist of more than 900,000 volumes.

One of the most useful sources of information about current events and activities are campus publications. Each campus has employee and/or student publications to provide you with the news of campus issues and features about the campus, employees and students.
