You can look forward to numerous opportunities for exploring your own potential. Training, educational and development opportunities are available to you. The success of the University of Missouri depends upon the growth and success of each employee. We are striving to achieve the common goal of preparing today's students for an exciting future. Working together we can accomplish our goal. Several advisory groups have been established to facilitate your contributions to our total effort. Examples include the UM Retirement and Staff Benefits Committee and staff advisory councils.

Absent an employment contract with a specified ending date or tenured faculty status, employment in the state of Missouri is considered "at will" and may be terminated by the employee or the employer at any time with or without cause.

Pay

To a great extent, your pay scale is determined by the resources made available to the university for that purpose through state appropriations. You will be compensated to the best of its ability in accordance with its resources, your qualifications, market and internal equity considerations. Salaries and wages are based upon your position responsibilities. Minimum and maximum rates have been established for most job classifications on each campus. As a further guide in establishing equitable salaries and wages, the university periodically conducts area wage and salary surveys. Such studies help to ensure that the rate of pay you receive compares favorably with rates for work of a similar nature on the campus and in the relevant recruitment area.

Personal Information

Whenever you change either your home or campus address, please complete a change of address form. Many important communications may be misdirected if your address is not current.

Changes in marital status or births or deaths in your immediate family should be reported to your supervisor, Human Resource Services and the Payroll Office, particularly because of their effect on your income tax deductions. Use an Employee's Withholding Exemption Certificate (Form W-4, U.S. Treasury Department) to file a change in exemptions. These forms are available from your department or the Payroll Office. Electronic updates can be made to employee records online.

Changes Affecting Faculty & Staff Benefits

A benefits booklet describing University of Missouri benefit programs, application deadlines and other information is available from your campus benefits representative. Correct insurance coverage depends on your notification to the campus benefits representative of any changes in your family situation that will affect the coverages in which you are enrolled (such as deaths, births, divorces or marriages). It is also important to report any changes in the university employment of your spouse. All changes must be made with your campus benefits representative within 30 days of the occurrence.

Safety

Interest in your safety and well-being begins at the top. The curators of the University of Missouri believe that a formal safety education and accident prevention program is vital to the operation of the university. The following excerpts are from a statement of policy adopted by the board of curators:

"Our goal shall be to provide for all faculty and staff members, safe facilities for the performance of their duties; of their education; and to ensure the general public reasonable protection from injury while on our campuses and in our buildings.

The achievement of our goal shall require the acceptance of the fact that safety cannot be considered as a separate program, but rather as an important and natural part of the functioning of every academic department and nonacademic office of the University of Missouri. The degree of academic achievement of every student and the degree of job proficiency of every employee cannot be completely assessed without reviewing the safety performance of each."

The university's fine safety record will continue to improve as you make efforts to avoid unsafe practices on your job. Please report any unsafe working conditions to your supervisor. Everyone desires your job to be as nonhazardous as possible. With your help that goal can be accomplished.

University Police

Units of the University Police are located on each of the university's campuses. The service and assistance of the campus police force is available to all university employees and students.

The fundamental mission of the University Police force is to provide the leadership and professional support required to sustain and improve the university’s efforts to develop a balanced police-university community effort against any lawlessness or disorderly conduct that could interfere with the general mission of the university.

Employees are encouraged to contact University Police whenever it is necessary to report the following occurrences: loss or theft of either personal or university-owned property; the commission or potential commission of a crime on campus; possible crisis situations and/or any problems related to traffic and parking.

Members of the University Police will present programs on crime prevention to individual departments upon request.
