In accordance with federal and state regulations, a minor less than 18 years of age may be employed by the University only under certain circumstances. This policy details those requirements.
No minors 13 years of age and younger shall be employed or permitted to work for the University at any occupation at any time, even if parental consent is obtained.
Minors under 14 years of age may not be employed by the University unless it is occasional work performed with the knowledge and written and endorsed consent of parents, legal custodian or guardian.
Minors between the ages of 14 and 16 may be employed by the University or its departments unless the employment is in connection with power driven machinery; in the oiling, cleaning, maintenance and washing of machinery, including any type of food processing equipment; upon any ladder, scaffolding, or their substitute; in the operation of any automobile, truck or motor vehicle or serve as a helper on such vehicle; in the operation of hoisting machines, cranes or freight elevators or any other elevator that might be used for the purpose of carrying freight or supplies; for a public messenger service; in occupations involving exposure to radioactive substances, or toxic or hazardous chemicals; outside window washing that involves working from window sills; work in freezers and meat coolers; in or about boiler or engine rooms; cooking and baking; communications and public utilities; work in warehouses except office and clerical work; loading and unloading goods to and from trucks or conveyors; manufacturing, mining or processing that requires the performance of any duties in work rooms or work places where goods are manufactured, mined or otherwise processed; or in any other occupation dangerous to the life, health or limb or injurious to the health or morals of minors under the age of 16.
A minor in this age group may not be employed during the regular school term unless issued a work certificate. It is not necessary for a minor over 14 but under 16 years of age to obtain a work certificate for the purpose of working during vacation periods.
During the school term, minors in this age group may not be employed or permitted to work during school hours except as provided in Work Experience and Career Exploration Programs. During non-school hours, they may not be employed before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m., more than three (3) hours a day (on school days), more than 18 hours a week during school weeks, more than eight (8) hours a day on non-school days or more than six (6) days a week. Finally, during hours outside the school term, minors in this age group may not be employed before 7:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m., more than eight (8) hours a day, more than 40 hours in a non-school week or more than six (6) days a week.
Applications for work certificates are issued and signed by, or under the direction of, the superintendent of public schools of the district in which the minor resides. If there is no such superintendent, they are signed by the county superintendent of the county in which the minor resides.
Minors in this age group are prohibited from working in the following occupations:
