HR-217 Suspension of Classes/Operations

Summary:

Teaching, research and public service activities are maintained in accordance with established schedules and operational demands. To this end, the suspension or cancellation of classes or the temporary suspension of campus operations will be avoided whenever possible. MU Health Care and other University services who maintain continuous operations may not follow these pay policies.

Authority:

Only the Chancellor (President for UM System) has the authority to cancel classes or suspend campus operations in the event of an emergency such as a natural, mechanical, or man- made incident.

Announcement:

All announcements of changes in operations will be released by the Chancellor (President for the UM System) through the Office of University Relations. UMC and UM System announcements will be coordinated so only one announcement is made.

Pay Procedures:

Unless otherwise determined by the President or the appropriate Chancellor, the following pay procedures will be in effect:

In the event of the suspension or cancellation of classes or the temporary suspension of campus operations, regular employees who report to work will receive straight pay and must account, with supervisory approval, for any tardiness or absence (lost work time) with accrued vacation, accrued personal days, adjusted work schedule (if available) or leave without pay. If reported, exempt employees may only report this time in one-half day increments.

Nonregular and probationary employees in such circumstances must account, with supervisory approval, for any tardiness or absence (lost work time) with an adjusted work schedule (if available) or leave without pay (probationary employees may use up to two accrued personal days).

Employees who do not report to work will not be paid and must utilize the above outlined procedures. Specific questions regarding pay procedures should be directed to the campus Human Resources office.
