The InstitutionThis theme recognizes the necessity of the leader to develop a broad understanding of the complex culture and environment of the University—within campuses, across the University System, and in conjunction with the larger community. It includes an emphasis on developing a more global perspective and also addresses the role of the leader relative to institutional values, vision and mission.
This theme recognizes that educational systems are made up of individuals. Effective leaders are intentional in developing themselves as healthy and effective individuals, and in actively promoting the growth and development of those around them. This theme also addresses leadership skills in interacting effectively with others, with a particular emphasis on the leader’s role in promoting an inclusive culture where everyone (staff, faculty, students) is valued, respected and understood.
This theme builds upon extensive leadership development literature. It includes emphasis on leadership expectations, values, styles and skills. It recognizes that leadership development activities must be based on sound theory, but also must be grounded in practical and contextually authentic experiences.
This theme addresses the knowledge and skills required to efficiently and effectively conduct one’s professional responsibilities. It includes the ability to manage data, people and things, familiarity with institutional policy and procedures, and the capacity to plan and problem-solve.
