
Marvin E. “Bunky” Wright, general counsel, has announced he will retire effective Dec. 31, 2007.
As general counsel, a position he has held since March 1, 1998, Wright reports directly to the Board of Curators.
Prior to his appointment as general counsel, Wright was engaged in private law practice for approximately 19 years as a partner with one of the top law firms in Columbia, Mo. He previously served as counsel in the University of Missouri Office of the General Counsel from 1967–1979.
Wright received his bachelor’s and juris doctor degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he was Order of the Coif and served as editor-in-chief of the University of Missouri Law Review. He is a former president of the Missouri Bar and the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA). During Wright’s service as president of NACUA, that organization, in conjunction with West Publishing Company, established the nationally-recognized journal, the Education Law Reporter.
The general counsel provides legal representation for the Board of Curators; administrators of the University of Missouri and each of its campuses; University of Missouri Extension; and University of Missouri Health Care.
In addition, the general counsel provides legal representation to University employees who are sued for their good faith actions arising within the scope of their employment for the University.
At its April 6 meeting in Rolla, the board approved establishing a General Counsel Search Committee to interview candidates for the position. Cheryl D. S. Walker, vice chair of the board, will serve as committee chair. Curators John M. Carnahan III, Warren K. Erdman and David Wasinger will serve as voting members of the committee. Wright will serve as an ex officio member.
