The University of Missouri Board of Curators continue their search for the next president of the University of Missouri.
The board serves as the presidential search committee, and a presidential search advisory committee of 19 members has been established to interview candidates. Executive search consultant Jerry Baker of Atlanta is assisting UM with the search.
After reviewing comments from the members of the presidential search advisory committee, the board reached consensus to enter into negotiations with one candidate regarding possible employment and terms and conditions, all contingent upon final approval by the board at a subsequent meeting. On May 30, that candidate advised the board that he could no longer be a candidate as he was going to accept another employment opportunity in the private sector.
At the June 1 meeting in Columbia, board chair Don Walsworth announced that the curators will continue their search and entertain new candidates for the position.
Dr. Gordon H. Lamb is currently serving as interim president. Lamb replaced Dr. Elson S. Floyd, who assumed the presidency of Washington State University in May.
The board approved the selection of firms for various projects, all at UM-Columbia.
Carter-Burgess, Inc., St. Louis, was selected for design services for the utility extensions and for cooling towers. The board approved Rogers-Schmidt Engineering Co., P.C., St. Louis, for design services for campus steam tunnels. The firm of Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co., Inc., St. Louis, was chosen for design services for a chilled water plant and piping.
Treanor Architects, P.A., Kansas City, was selected for design services for the Hudson, Gillett and Rollins halls renovation.
The University of Missouri Board of Curators approved changing the UM-St. Louis mascot from the Rivermen/Riverwomen to the Tritons.
UMSL Chancellor Thomas George formed a mascot committee in response to student leaders in 2006. The committee included students, faculty, staff and alumni in the selection of names for consideration.
Tritons was selected as the new mascot. Triton is the seventh moon of the planet Neptune and also has the distinction of being the son of Poseidon/Neptune from Greco-Roman mythology.
