Mission and Strategy
Responsibilities Of Office
The Office of Research and Economic Development was established in 2005 to link research and commercialization from the four University of Missouri System campuses with emerging and existing firms across the state and around the world. Working closely with the chief research officers, chancellors and technology transfer offices from each campus, the office also serves as a conduit to local, state and federal agencies to ensure research results aid the growth of Missouri’s economy.
The office’s vision is to enable and lead Missouri’s transformation toward a knowledge-based economy dependent upon innovation and entrepreneurship.
Office goals
Better prepare the university’s students for the demands of the future, including the role that innovation and entrepreneurship will play in their success in the workforce of tomorrow
Broaden and deepen the university’s impact as an economic growth engine through the facilities and culture surrounding our campus communities and state resources
Stimulate innovation/technology-based economic growth
Educate stakeholders on impact of university commercialization efforts
Provide opportunities for growing companies at university incubators, accelerators and research parks throughout the state
Current strategies
Increase opportunities for internships, jobs and exposure to innovation-based businesses for students/faculty by growing or recruiting companies at our research park sites
Continually improve the “time to market” of research results and the accompanying processes of technology transfer and commercialization
Coordinate statewide resources, to include funding opportunities and pipeline of facilities and service providers, to increase new venture creation through integration with local and state agencies
Better communication to internal and external constituents about the research and technology commercialization accomplishments of the university
Enhance the marketing of the university’s ideas and technologies through, among other things, public/private partnerships, especially in strategic areas such as the life sciences, information technology, nanoengineering, materials science, pharmaceuticals and medical devices
