UM-Kansas City Chancellor Martha W. Gilliland announced today her decision to resign as chancellor effective Dec. 31, 2004. She will continue at UMKC as a tenured professor in the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering.

"I want to extend my gratitude to Chancellor Gilliland for her vision and service to the University and the Kansas City area," UM President Elson S. Floyd said. "UMKC has achieved great momentum toward its goal of becoming a great urban research university. I will do everything I can to continue the unprecedented interaction between the UMKC campus and the Kansas City community."

Dr. Floyd said that he will be dividing his time between Columbia and Kansas City during the months of January and February. He will make a decision about an interim chancellor after that time.

"I have witnessed first-hand the commitment and enthusiasm of UMKC family," Floyd said. "I will work closely with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the Kansas City community in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition of leadership."
