Glen Cope named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UMSL

Glen Cope has been named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, effective Aug. 16.

As the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, Cope will serve as the university’s chief academic officer and will report directly to Chancellor Thomas George. She will assist him in developing and implementing the strategic plan for the campus. Cope also will direct all aspects of the university’s teaching and research missions, including student affairs and libraries.

Cope comes to UMSL from the University of Illinois at Springfield, where she serves as dean of the College of Public Affairs and Administration and professor of public administration. Prior to that position, she was associate dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.

"I'm very excited about taking on this new position," Cope said. "I look forward to working closely with the campus administrative officers to help every student perform to his or her maximum potential."

She also has held faculty positions at The American University in Washington D.C., and The Ohio State University in Columbus.

"Dr. Cope has the personal qualities and the track record that make her the outstanding choice for us," George said. "We are extremely fortunate to have someone of her caliber and experience join our campus community."

She has published widely on public policy and administration, and co-edited the book "Central-Local Relations and Local Government Reform in Korea" (Kyonggi Research Institute, 2003).

Cope earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She received a master's degree in public administration from Syracuse University in New York and a doctoral degree in public administration from The Ohio State University in Columbus.

With more than 15,000 students, the University of Missouri-St. Louis is the third largest university in Missouri. UMSL offers 46 undergraduate degree programs, 30 master's degree programs, 13 doctoral degree programs and the state's only professional degree in optometry. UMSL was founded in 1963.
