University of Missouri Interim President Gordon H. Lamb issued the following statement in response to higher education initiatives proposed by Governor Matt Blunt during the Governor's State of the State Address and Budget Message on Tuesday evening, January 15:

"I applaud Governor Blunt's leadership in supporting critically needed investments in public higher education. These are investments in Missourians, by Missourians. Our fellow citizens expect the University of Missouri to prepare students for a competitive future. The investments proposed by the Governor will help the University fulfill its missions of teaching, research, service and economic development."

"We particularly appreciate the Governor's commitment to supplemental funding for the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the Pharmacy and Nursing Building at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. These vital projects are investments in the health and well-being of Missouri's citizens."

"The University of Missouri has joined an unprecedented partnership with our state's two- and four-year public institutions to increase the number of graduates in the health professions. I applaud the Governor's support for the Preparing to Care initiative, which has statewide support and hometown impact."
