Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt said during his State of the State address on Wednesday evening that he wants to continue the state's reinvestment in public higher education, gain legislative approval for the Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative and make positive changes to strengthen state financial aid for college students.

"I commend the governor's strong commitment to helping the University of Missouri improve its service to students and to our state," said University of Missouri President Elson S. Floyd. "This continued reinvestment in our colleges and universities will help our state stay competitive and provide the academic quality that is so critical for our citizens to thrive in an evolving global economy. In turn, the University of Missouri renews its long-standing commitment to make higher education affordable, accessible and accountable in service to Missourians."

President Floyd continued: "The Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative is an innovative answer to real construction and renovation needs at the University of Missouri and across higher education in our state. Governor Blunt has shepherded the best opportunity we have had in years to move ahead on critically needed projects, and I commend him for this robust and creative plan."
