Stokes named interim chancellor; Ward named
interim vice chancellor for student affairs at MU

Members of the MU community:

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Garnett Stokes as the interim chancellor of the University of Missouri-Columbia, effective May 3. Dr. Stokes will serve in the role of interim chancellor until a permanent chancellor arrives on campus.

Dr. Stokes has served admirably as MU’s Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost since joining the university in February 2015. During her tenure at MU, she has been instrumental in shaping the university’s campus leadership, hiring eight of the 13 deans currently serving as well as important Provost staff positions including Associate Provost and Vice Provost for Enrollment Management. In addition, under Stokes’ direction, the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX were established, which centralized reports and investigations of discrimination and provided more process and rigor around how cases of discrimination and sexual misconduct are addressed at MU.

I am also pleased to announce that, effective May 8, 2017, Mr. Gary Ward will serve as interim vice chancellor for student affairs, in addition to his current role as vice chancellor for operations. Mr. Ward is a talented, decisive and results-oriented leader with a deep commitment to the success of Mizzou. He will work closely with senior university leaders and external specialists to reimagine the comprehensive student experience for the best living and learning outcomes, with an emphasis on developing student-first principles.  After the organization review, we will launch a national leadership search.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Cathy Scroggs for her many years of distinguished service to the University of Missouri.  She will serve as a special advisor to me until her retirement in July 2017.
