The Manager, Planning & Business Development supports the strategic growth and operational advancement of MU Health System by leading business development and planning initiatives that guide major investments, such as new clinical programs, facilities, or service lines, and other key organizational initiatives. This position works collaboratively with physician leaders, senior management, and outside organizations to align internal priorities with market trends, using industry data to track healthcare changes, competitor activity, and key benchmarks that support strategic decisions.
Lead the development of business plans, white papers, and planning deliverables for new opportunities, program evaluations, and strategic projects in collaboration with senior leadership, executive directors, physician leaders, and service line directors.
Coordinate multi-departmental planning efforts, including facilities, engineering, IT, and marketing, and present findings and recommendations to senior leadership for approval.
Oversee major service line planning initiatives in alignment with strategic goals, including the identification and evaluation of growth opportunities in partnership with clinical and administrative leaders.
Conduct comprehensive environmental assessments, including analysis of market trends, competitive positioning, patient demand, and community health needs, to inform strategic priorities.
Support senior departmental leadership in negotiating and managing new business ventures, such as joint ventures, mergers, and acquisitions.
Lead market research and data analysis on service line performance, payer trends, and industry benchmarks to guide service line development and organizational growth strategies. Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership and service line leaders.
Monitor, analyze, and report on healthcare industry trends and external environmental data to develop insights and strategic recommendations.
Lead a team of planning and project specialists to execute business development functions across the health system.
Prepare presentations and business planning documents to support executive-level decision-making.
Evaluate the operational impact of service line and business plans on unit performance and financial outcomes.
Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the department and across the organization.
Manage the development, coordination, and maintenance of daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of coverage and continuity of care.
Monitor and oversee time and attendance in alignment with MU Health System policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely approval for payroll purposes.
May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.
Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with advanced communication skills, including the capacity to effectively present data and insights to diverse audiences.
Applies knowledge of project management, process improvement, and analytical tools to develop and execute strategic initiatives within budgetary and organizational parameters.
Collaborates effectively across multidisciplinary teams, managing multiple priorities while delivering high-quality outcomes.
Leverages experience in developing strategic plans and materials to influence senior leadership while maintaining independent, objective perspectives.
Demonstrates knowledge of unit workflows, policies, and procedures to manage daily operations, maintain standards, and support quality improvement.
Applies leadership and interpersonal skills to supervise staff, foster collaboration, and drive accountability and service excellence.
Uses foundational budgeting and compliance skills to manage resources, support survey readiness, and ensure regulatory adherence.
Extensive knowledge of health care planning databases. Knowledge of Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Familiar with using the Internet for research and resources.
Supervision is received from the Senior Director, Strategic Growth & Development.
Supervision is exercised over a team of planning and project specialists.
Bachelor's degree in health administration, business administration, or a healthcare-related field.
Five (5) years of experience in healthcare planning, including business plan development and execution, facilitation of strategic processes, financial analysis, and leadership experience.
Master's degree in health administration, business administration, or a related field.
Experience in Certificate of Need planning.
Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
