The Director, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning leads MU Health Care's artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and generative AI (GenAl) initiatives, transforming enterprise data into predictive insights, intelligent automation, and decision-support solutions. Oversees the development, deployment, and governance of AI technologies, ensuring responsible, scalable, and high-impact outcomes aligned with clinical, operational, and strategic objectives.
Owns and advances a multi-year AI/ML and operations research roadmap aligned with health system priorities.
Establishes and participates in AI governance frameworks that ensure ethical, transparent, and compliant AI adoption.
Evaluates and implements enterprise AI platforms, supporting performance, scalability, and innovation.
Leads the design of Al-ready data assets and collaborates with engineering teams to develop feature stores, labeled datasets, and optimized data pipelines.
Defines architecture and performance standards for data and ML pipelines to support scalable model training and inference.
Partners with engineering and product teams to develop application programming interfaces (API) that deliver model insights into real-time enterprise workflows and applications.
Ensures robust integration of AI into clinical, operational, and administrative systems using app-layer and API strategies.
Oversees the development and deployment of Al-powered applications such as chatbots, digital assistants, and decision support tools.
Champions human-centered application design and usability through collaboration with UX teams and frontline operations.
Directs operationalization of AI using machine learning operations (MLOps) and large language model operations (LLMOps) practices, supporting continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
Leads AI embedding into workflows to provide actionable, explainable outputs that align with clinical and operational needs.
Collaborates with Informatics, IT, and Product teams to deploy AI at the point-of-care or point-of-decision.
Develops automation frameworks to accelerate the integration of AI solutions across the enterprise.
Manages a portfolio of AI/ML/OR use cases with measurable clinical, operational, and financial outcomes.
Translates technical outputs into business-oriented insights using dashboards, visual narratives, and stakeholder reports.
Tracks adoption, ROI, and performance of AI initiatives, ensuring feedback loops that support improvement and prioritization.
Leads a culture of safety through proactive risk mitigation and continuous quality improvement, taking measures to routinely evaluate regulatory readiness. Monitors and analyzes safety and performance metrics to identify trends and implement corrective actions for staff and patients.
Oversees the development, coordination, and maintenance of daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of coverage and continuity of care across units.
Directs the implementation and oversight of MU Health Care time and attendance policies and practices.
May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.
Applies broad clinical and administrative knowledge to align departmental strategy with health system goals and patient outcomes.
Leads managers and supervisors to foster accountability, develop talent, and ensure high performance across service areas.
Drives operational efficiency through advanced planning, budgeting, and stakeholder engagement across internal and external initiatives.
Supervision is received from the Executive Director, Data Analytics, or designated senior executive.
Supervision is exercised over AI/ML engineers, data scientists, MLOps engineers, and associated technical teams.
Bachelor's degree in a related area.
Master's degree in a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired.
Seven (7) years of related experience, including technical leadership and deployment of enterprise AI/ML solutions.
Hands-on expertise with Databricks, Spark, and cloud-native AI/ML platforms.
Experience in healthcare or other highly regulated industries.
