The Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) provides compliance executive leadership for MU Health Care (including all hospitals and clinics), the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences, and NextGen Precision Health. The CCO manages the strategic vision for the compliance and privacy department. The CCO develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive compliance and privacy program tailored to the organization's diverse needs. The CCO serves as the principal advisor and leader for corporate compliance and privacy matters, ensuring a culture of ethics, accountability, and transparency across clinical, academic, and administrative operations.
Oversees adherence to standards set by applicable regulatory bodies through the development, periodic review, implementation, and communication of compliance and privacy policies and procedures.
Coordinates compliance training programs, including orientation and ongoing education, to promote understanding of ethical standards, privacy requirements, and regulatory obligations.
Leads investigations of potential compliance issues and provides oversight of resolution strategies and corrective action planning.
Establishes and maintains methods to identify, reduce, and mitigate risks related to fraud, waste, abuse, and privacy breaches.
Stays abreast of evolving regulatory practices, rules, and legislation relevant to healthcare compliance.
Serves as the principal point of contact for responding to inquiries and investigations from government and regulatory agencies.
Establishes and sustains all elements of an effective compliance program, including a code of conduct, risk assessment, policy management, education, monitoring, investigations, and consistent enforcement.
Keeps senior leadership and the Board of Curators informed of ongoing investigations, violations, action plans, and trends through regular reports.
Fosters an organizational culture where employees are encouraged to report suspected misconduct without fear of retaliation.
Evaluates reports of non-compliant behavior, consults with General Counsel as needed, and implements timely mitigation or resolution measures.
Chairs the Executive Compliance Committee and provides oversight to other regulatory or governance-related committees.
Provides reports to the Curators of the University of Missouri or a designated Board committee.
Maintains documentation to demonstrate an effective compliance program.
Leads a culture of safety through proactive risk mitigation and continuous quality improvement, taking measures to routinely evaluate regulatory readiness. Monitors and analyzes safety and performance metrics to identify trends and implement corrective actions for staff and/or patients as appropriate.
May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.
In-depth understanding of federal and state healthcare laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statutes, False Claims Act, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy, Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), and Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA.)
Understanding of billing and coding standards (CPT, ICD-10, DRG, etc.) and revenue cycle compliance.
Defines and executes system-wide strategies to advance the mission of MU Health Care. Leads multi-campus operations with alignment across clinical, academic, and administrative domains to ensure cohesive execution.
Applies high-level analytical, leadership, and interpersonal skills to resolve sensitive and complex compliance issues.
Leads change and drives accountability through cross-functional collaboration and strategic foresight.
Supervision is received from the Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs or designee. This position shall not be or be subordinate to the General Counsel or have any responsibilities that involve acting in any capacity as legal counsel or supervising legal counsel functions for MU Health Care.
Supervision exercised over professional and administrative staff within the Corporate Compliance and Privacy department.
Master's degree in business, healthcare administration, public health, law, compliance, or other related field.
Ten (10) years of related experience.
Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) by the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA).
Juris Doctor (JD), Certified in Health Care Privacy Compliance (CPC), or other relevant certification.
Extensive experience in healthcare compliance within an academic medical center or integrated health system.
