Nature of Work

Review all cancer cases submitted by Missouri reporting facilities to ensure data meets all requirements for quality, timeliness and completeness in accordance with Missouri state statutes and national standards as set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR).

  • Evaluate quality of data submitted by Missouri hospitals or other reporting facilities and provide feedback as mandated by the State (192.650-192.657 RSMo) and national standard setters.

  • Act as a decisive resource regarding cancer registry-related questions from reporting facilities.

  • Identify delinquent reporting facilities and make recommendations to Central Registry Senior Data Coordinator regarding appropriate action(s).

  • Abstract information from patient records submitted by reporting facilities into a computerized database according to standardized coding rules and meeting quality standards. Use knowledge and experience as a tumor registrar to reach consensus on complex coding issues.

  • Carry out case-finding procedures for identifying cases eligible for inclusion into the cancer registry through detailed review of medical records and reports.

  • Assist Central Registry Senior Data Coordinator to establish and implement policies and procedures for data review, data management reports and quality control issues.

  • Participate in the assessment and evaluation of Central Registry database, other information repositories, and supporting software annually or as needed.

  • Assist with developing and maintaining policies and procedures, reporting forms and the MCR Abstracting Code Manual.

  • Conduct ongoing review of reporting guidelines, paying particular attention to changes in coding and abstracting rules and requirements.

  • Assist Central Registry Senior Data Coordinator with quality assurance activities, death clearance processes and audits.

  • Assist in preparing and conducting training sessions and workshops for hospital-based registrars and/or staff at other health care facilities reporting cancer.

  • Take active role in state and national professional associations and funding agency activities by developing and presenting abstracts, serving on committees and attending state, regional and national meetings.

  • Stay current with industry standards by attending and participating in state, regional and national workshops and meetings.

  • Advocate for the Missouri Cancer Registry and cancer registry profession by developing publications and staffing booths at professional conferences.

  • Participate in special projects or activities as requested.

Key Responsibilities(to be completed by department)

Supervision Received

General supervision is received from the Central Registry Senior Data Coordinators, Missouri Cancer Registry Operations Director, Central Registry Manager, Assistant Central Registry Manager, or designated department supervisor.

Supervision Exercised

Functional supervision may be exercised over Central Registry Data Specialist and support staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in a health science or a related medical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired, is necessary.

Must possess current Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential from the National Cancer Registrar's Association.

Two or more years' experience abstracting and/or reviewing cancer data in hospital-based or central cancer registry from which an in-depth knowledge of a broad range of cancer diagnoses has been acquired.

Fully competent to utilize computerized word processing and spreadsheet programs, with proven experience using computerized cancer data collection software.

Proven communication and persuasion skills needed to successfully interact with medical professionals and researchers to gain their active support and completion of needed records and information requests.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree preferred.
