BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Sterile Processing Technician Certified, UH is responsible for the preparation, tracking, and sterilization of equipment and instruments in an accurate and timely manner. Prepare operating room case carts, sterile trays, and supplies. Perform multiple tasks that assist in the daily operations of sterile processing and customer service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Disassemble, clean, assemble, and test instrumentation for proper functioning.

Employees in a lead capacity will assist with teaching new hires and work as resource person for other staff and hospital units.

Perform and participate in the decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembling, and packaging of medical/surgical materials, including instruments and equipment, according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.

Prepare trays and specialty carts for designated areas according to prescribed procedures. Wrap and/or package items for specified areas according to procedures prescribed for those designated areas. Operate instrument tracking systems.

Use knowledge of different types of sterilization materials and equipment to choose the appropriate material for sterilization processes. Assist in the maintenance of supply and materials inventory, to include documenting usage, issuing, receiving, and recording as assigned.

May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of sterilization supplies, equipment, and instruments.

Knowledge of organizing, containing, and transporting items of varying compounds, textures, or quantities.

Knowledge of transporting and disposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to hospital procedures.

Knowledge of sterilization procedures of various equipment and instruments.

Knowledge of wrapping and repackaging sterilized instruments.

Knowledge of computers and Windows environment.

Skill in using sterilization equipment and instruments.

Skill in arranging instruments on surgical trays.

Skill in following written instructions and performing multiple tasks.

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Direct supervision is received from the Manager, Sterile Processing, Supervisor, Sterile Processing, or designee.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of experience as a surgical sterilization technician. Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification by Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or surgical technologist program graduation may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification by HSPA within one (1) year of hire as a condition of continued employment in this job classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of some college coursework.

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 lbs. and occasionally move objects up to 25 lbs.

This role may also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have

contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
