BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Sterile Processing Technician, UH is responsible for the preparation, tracking, and sterilization of equipment and instruments in an accurate and timely manner. Prepare operating room case carts, sterile trays, and supplies. Perform multiple tasks that assist in the daily operations for sterile processing and customer service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Disassemble, clean, assemble, and test instrumentation for proper functioning.

Employees in a lead capacity will assist with teaching new hires and work as a resource person for other staff and other hospital units.

Perform and participate in the decontamination, inspection, cleaning, assembling, and packaging of medical/surgical materials including instruments and equipment, according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.

Prepare trays and specialty carts for designated areas according to prescribed procedures. Wrap and/or package items for specified areas according to procedures prescribed for those designated areas. Operate instrument tracking systems.

Use knowledge of different types of sterilization materials and equipment to choose the appropriate material for sterilization processes. Assist in the maintenance of supply and materials inventory to include documenting usage, issuing, receiving, and recording as assigned.

May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of sterilization supplies, equipment, and instruments.

Knowledge of organizing, containing, and transporting items of varying compounds, textures, or quantities.

Knowledge of transporting and disposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to hospital procedures.

Knowledge of sterilization procedures of various equipment and instruments.

Knowledge of wrapping and repackaging sterilized instruments.

Knowledge of computers and Windows environment.

Skill in using sterilization equipment and instruments.

Skill in arranging instruments on surgical trays.

Skill in following written instructions and performing multiple tasks.

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Direct supervision is received from the Manager, Sterile Processing, Supervisor, Sterile Processing, or designee.

REQUIRED OUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of experience as a sterile processing technician or surgical technician.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited program for surgical technology or completion of a program for sterile processing; or equivalent training from a military or hospital-based program.

Experience as a sterile processing technician.

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role may also routinely come into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
