BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Supervisor, Reproductive Lab performs laboratory procedures involving testing and achieving pregnancy in infertile couples through IUI's, IVF, and other related reproductive procedures. Demonstrate superior judgment and discretion when managing testing supervisor responsibilities and delegated supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Oversee daily laboratory operations, assure quality, and assist in identifying areas for ongoing quality improvement measures. Assume various responsibilities on a rotating basis to ensure the effective operations of a cohesive and productive laboratory team.

Perform the duties of the Embryology and Andrology Laboratory testing personnel as necessary. Maintain proficiency in all embryology and andrology methods, adhere to established protocols, and use independent judgment in interpreting data and making decisions.

Update the laboratory policy and procedure manual and participate in procedure development. Ensure laboratory staff have training on procedures, policies, and instrumentation. Make recommendations for new tests, methods, equipment, and opportunities for cost containment.

Assist with personnel competency assessments. Communicate any personnel concerns or recommendations to the lab director.

Maintain processes of Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Quality Improvement. Assist in preparing for regulatory agency inspections. Assist in determining appropriate Proficiency Testing programs and managing Proficiency Testing events.

Lead operational troubleshooting and resolve technical problems independently within the scope of responsibilities. Maintain communication with product and equipment manufacturers and servicers and help ensure continuity of quality services. Assist in assuring that all corrective action measures are adequate and driving the laboratory unit towards streamlining processes. Provide feedback and maintain close communication with the lab director regarding any concerns.

Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of unit coverage and continuity of care.

Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal/approval for payroll purposes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) methods, equipment, standards, and regulatory guidelines.

Possess an extensive background in reproductive biology and tissue culture principles and procedures.

Possess an extremely flexible schedule and the ability to share on-call responsibilities.

Ability to work independently as well as the ability to function as a team member.

Possess very close attention to detail and the ability to work with accuracy under pressure.

Excellent communication skills, and must have a respectful and professional demeanor with patients and staff members.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Administrative Supervision is received from the Practice Manager. Functional supervision is received from the Director, Reproductive Lab Services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Administrative supervision of the lab testing personnel.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical science or technology, chemistry, biology, or physics, or a related field.

Three (3) years of lab experience in embryology or andrology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

General Supervisor (GS) certification, Andrology Laboratory Scientist (ALS), or Embryology Laboratory Scientist (ELS) certification by the AAB Board of Registry (ABOR).

One (1) year of supervisory experience.

Technical Supervisor (TS) certification in either embryology or andrology by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB).

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs. This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses.

This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
