BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Pharmacy Technician, Community Certified performs technical duties related to the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist in an ambulatory pharmacy setting. This position supports pharmacy operations and contributes to safe, efficient, and patient-centered medication services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Prepares, dispenses, and distributes medications in accordance with pharmacy procedures and regulatory guidelines.

Receives prescriptions and performs accurate data entry into pharmacy dispensing software.

Adjudicates third-party insurance claims, identifying and resolving billing issues as appropriate.

Prepares and labels prescriptions to meet all applicable state and federal requirements.

Conducts point-of-sale transactions with accurate cash handling and adherence to patient counseling and out-window procedures.

Communicates effectively with patients, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team to support efficient operations and accurate information exchange.

Answers telephone calls and triages inquiries not requiring a pharmacist, including accepting verbal prescription orders and managing prescription transfers.

Provides on-the-job training to new pharmacy personnel and assists in assessing performance and progress.

Delivers exceptional customer service and maintains professionalism in all interactions with patients, team members, and other healthcare providers.

May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of retail pharmacy operations, insurance processing, and medication preparation.

Strong communication and customer service skills.

Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.

Familiarity with pharmacy information systems and labeling requirements.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Administrative supervision is received from the Supervisor, Ambulatory Pharmacy. Functional supervision is received from the pharmacist on duty.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional supervision is exercised over pharmacy technicians and support staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) certification by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern licensure by the Missouri Board of Pharmacy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of pharmacy experience.

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs.

This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
