The Supervisor, Ambulatory Pharmacy independently leads and optimizes the operational, financial, and personnel activities of assigned ambulatory or outpatient pharmacy settings. The role ensures regulatory compliance, high standards of patient care, and effective integration of pharmacy operations with health system goals. This position includes supervisory responsibilities and active engagement in clinical pharmacy practice.
Maintains compliance with all applicable state, federal, and institutional regulations related to pharmacy practice.
Implements and maintains pharmacy policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to third-party contracts, regulatory standards, and, as applicable, accreditation requirements.
Oversees and enforces third-party payer requirements and contract maintenance.
Monitors and analyzes business performance; implements systems to track profitability and expand pharmacy services.
Hires and provides direct supervision, training, and evaluation of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, students, and residents.
Develops and monitors departmental goals, objectives, and programs aligned with strategic outcomes.
Optimizes pharmacy operations by initiating measurable improvements in quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Acts as liaison between pharmacy and provider clinics and/or inpatient units to enhance service coordination.
Serves as a resource for resolving patient safety incidents, complaints, and satisfaction concerns.
Leads initiatives in quality improvement, resource allocation, and change management to ensure efficient and compliant operations.
For specialty pharmacy supervisors: Serves as Compliance Officer for Mizzou Specialty Pharmacy, overseeing regulatory tracking, internal audits, and quality management programs.
Leads a culture of safety through proactive risk mitigation and continuous quality improvement, taking measures to evaluate regulatory readiness routinely. Monitors and analyzes safety and performance metrics to identify trends and implement corrective actions for staff and/or patients as appropriate.
Develops, coordinates, and maintains daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of unit coverage and continuity of care.
Monitors time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal/approval for payroll purposes.
May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.
Knowledge of unit workflows, policies, and procedures to manage daily operations, maintain standards, and support quality improvement.
Applies leadership and interpersonal skills to supervise staff, foster collaboration, and drive accountability and service excellence.
Uses foundational budgeting and compliance skills to manage resources, support survey readiness, and ensure regulatory adherence.
Strong communication and conflict resolution skills with ability to interact with patients, providers, and staff.
Ability to implement change, oversee regulatory compliance, and manage loss prevention strategies.
Business acumen in ambulatory pharmacy expansion and contract compliance.
Supervision is received from the pharmacy department designee.
Supervision is exercised over pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff.
Pharmacist licensure by the Missouri Board of Pharmacy.
One (1) year of outpatient, ambulatory, or retail pharmacist experience.
Medication Therapy Services (MTS) endorsement by the Missouri Board of Pharmacy within one (1) year as a condition of continued employment in this job classification.
Notice of Intent to Immunize (NOI) endorsement by the Missouri Board of Pharmacy within one (1) year as a condition of continued employment in this job classification.
Experience in a supervisory role within pharmacy operations.
Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Residency.
Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
