Nature of Work

Performs as an expert practitioner and leader in a clinical specialty, including care of the patient and family, consultation, education and research.

  • Conducts comprehensive health assessments and demonstrates a high level of autonomy and expert skill in the diagnosis and treatment of actual and potential health problems. May enter into collaborative practice agreements with physician colleagues.

  • Role models effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making.

  • Coordinates the activities of health care providers and resources toward achievement of identified outcomes for individual patients.

  • Serves as a consultant for identified areas of expertise.

  • Directs the process of patient education in areas of clinical expertise.

  • Identifies issues related to patient/family rights, assists staff and makes recommendations for change.

  • Role models professional behavior and assumes a leadership role in a clinical specialty.

  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth to maintain or increase competency in clinical knowledge and skills.

  • Collaborates with staff, students and faculty to promote professional development.

  • Facilitates professional and community activities related to areas of expertise.

  • Designs, implements, evaluates and communicates nursing research and acts as a resource to staff in research projects.

  • Guides the development and implementation of structure, process and outcomes standards.

  • Identifies trends related to specialty patient population(s) and participates in quality improvement activities.

  • Participates in committees and projects to achieve unit, service, divisional and hospital goals.

  • Acts to safeguard the patient, family, staff and guests when health care and safety are affected by the competence, ethics or illegal practice of any person. Adheres to the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

  • Role models guest relations skills.

  • May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.

Key Responsibilities(to be completed by department)

Supervision Received

Direction is received from a designated Medical Department Chair or Collaborating Physician. Administrative supervision is received from a designated Nurse Manager or Administrator.

Supervision Exercised

Supervision may be exercised over staff level nurses, nursing support staff and students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Missouri Board of Nursing RN or Nurse Licensure Compact multi-state RN. When primary state of residency changes, compact state RNs must apply under new state of residency within thirty (30) days.

  • Documentation of recognition as an Advanced Practice Nurse and/or equivalent knowledge, education and experience to obtain APN recognition from the Missouri Board of Nursing.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification in a specialty practice area. Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs. This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
