The Manager, Accounting oversees the accounting function, including the management of general ledger activities, financial reporting, and compliance with accounting standards. This role involves managing highly complex accounting functions, such as the preparation and analysis of financial statements, overseeing the monthly and year-end close processes, and ensuring proper revenue recognition and expense management. The Manager will lead efforts in budgeting, forecasting, and audit coordination while ensuring adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements. In addition, this role will manage and mentor a team of accountants, including Senior Accountants, and collaborate with leadership to support strategic financial initiatives and maintain the integrity of the hospital's financial operations.
Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including the preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end closing processes.
Develop and maintain effective internal controls to ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records.
Prepare and present monthly financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
Review and analyze financial reports to provide insights and recommendations to senior management and assist in strategic decision-making.
Coordinate the annual audit process, collaborating with the Controller and Assistant Controller to prepare audit schedules and manage auditor questions.
Develop and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy within the accounting department.
Manage, mentor, develop, and motivate a team of accounting professionals to achieve common goals and objectives.
Communicate financial information to stakeholders, including shareholders, banks, and regulatory agencies.
Maintain current knowledge of accounting regulations and legislation. Ensure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), hospital policies, and relevant regulations, including any changes in financial reporting standards.
Collaborate with Finance leadership and other departments to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives.

Serve as a financial resource for department heads, providing guidance on accounting policies, budget management, and financial decision-making.
Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of coverage.
Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal/approval for payroll purposes.
May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.
Expert knowledge of GAAP, accounting standards, and financial reporting requirements.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage, mentor, and develop an accounting team.
Advanced financial analysis capabilities with the ability to interpret complex data and provide strategic insights.
Experience with accounting software, including hospital-specific systems.
Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead financial initiatives and process improvement projects.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving complex accounting issues.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly present financial information to senior leadership and non-financial stakeholders.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
Direction is received from the Assistant Controller.
Supervision provided to staff in the Accounting department.

Five (5) years of experience in accounting, finance, or a related area.
One (1) year of experience in a lead or supervisory position.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) by the Missouri Board of Accountancy or another state board.
Previous experience in a healthcare accounting role with knowledge of hospital financial operations, billing, and reimbursement processes.
Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
