BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Nurse, Staff I Inpatient, under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, performs routine patient care assignments in commonly occurring situations using established standards.

This is a novice nurse position that lasts for a year while working on a nurse residency program. The Nurse, Staff I is responsible for progressing towards and meeting the Nurse II job description and performance standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assesses the patient's condition and nursing needs, sets goals, and prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet those goals and the physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative needs of the patient, including discharge planning.

Assesses, intervenes, and reassesses the patient's self-report and pain symptoms promptly. Utilizes an appropriate tool for assessment and reassessment (0-10 numerical scale, FACES, or the FLACC.)

Demonstrates an understanding of medications regarding action and side effects. Reports pertinent information to the appropriate individual. Educates patients and significant others about their medications.

Demonstrates the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in accomplishing goals and intended patient care outcomes.

Maintain the standards of nursing care and implement the policies and procedures of the hospital and assigned nursing unit.

Participates in meetings, in-services, and quality and performance improvement groups. Understands the attendance and punctuality guidelines, and adhere to the dress code.

Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate person and records those observations accurately and concisely.

Provides quality patient care and works with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the highest patient satisfaction.

May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision is received by the departmental manager or designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional supervision may be exercised over nursing support staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Missouri Board of Nursing RN or Nurse Licensure Compact multi-state RN. When primary state of residency changes, compact state RNs must apply under new state of residency within thirty (30) days.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs.

This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
