BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Chief Strategy Officer is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to expand the clinical care enterprise and increase patient populations, ensuring market competitiveness and alignment with the organization's education and research priorities. This role involves monitoring industry trends, positioning resources for long-term growth, and leading large-scale strategic projects from inception to execution.

Key responsibilities include maintaining market intelligence, identifying growth opportunities, and supporting MU Health System's mission to improve health for all, particularly Missourians. The Chief Strategy Officer represents the organization in interactions with other healthcare entities, demonstrating market knowledge, creativity, relationship-building skills, and the ability to handle sensitive, confidential matters.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Develops and implements growth strategies to define and execute long-term plans for expanding the clinical enterprise across Missouri, aligning clinical care, research, and education priorities while adapting to market changes.

Leads strategic alignment and execution by facilitating collaboration between MU Health Care, the School of Medicine, and University Physicians to ensure cohesive execution of system-wide growth strategies and validate alignment with organizational priorities.

Oversees annual growth planning by defining growth strategies and tactics in partnership with Finance-Business Development, ensuring targets are achievable and aligned with organizational goals.

Leads the Clinical Advisory Team in prioritizing clinical growth opportunities based on alignment with health system priorities.

Manages health system relations by overseeing clinical outreach and relationship management, collaborating with operational and clinical leaders to enhance patient and provider experiences.

Develops strategic partnerships by identifying and pursuing collaborative opportunities with private practices, community health centers, and nonprofit hospitals, evaluating strategic value in coordination with leadership and advisory groups.

Drives partnership development by initiating and leading discussions with potential partners, managing pro forma development, conducting due diligence, and overseeing affiliate integration.

Leads telemedicine strategy through oversight of the development and execution

of the Telemedicine Strategic Plan, including chairing the Virtual Care Executive Committee and managing day-to-day telemedicine operations.

Assesses and implements virtual care opportunities by evaluating departmental readiness and identifying areas for advancement aligned with clinical growth strategies.

Oversees the growth and development of the strategic planning team by supporting strategic initiatives and fulfilling additional unit-specific responsibilities as needed.

Leads a culture of safety through proactive risk mitigation and continuous quality improvement, taking measures to routinely evaluate regulatory readiness. Monitors and analyzes safety and performance metrics to identify trends and implement corrective actions for staff and/or patients as appropriate.

Manage the development, coordination, and maintenance of daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of coverage and continuity of care.

Monitor and oversee time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely approval for payroll purposes.

May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Defines and executes system-wide strategies to advance the mission, health equity, and patient-centered care.

Leads multi-campus operations with alignment across clinical, academic, and administrative domains to ensure cohesive execution.

Oversees complex budgets and regulatory structures, aligning finances with population health goals and building key external partnerships.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision provided by Chief Executive Officer, MU Health Care, or designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision exercised over assigned leadership within the strategic planning and growth functions of the health system.

REQUIRED OUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in health administration, business administration, or a related field.

Ten (10) years progressive and significant leadership experience in health care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in leading physician practices or multi-specialty groups.

Fellow (FACHE) certification by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) or American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE) certification by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) is strongly preferred.

Experience leading multi-site operations.

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
