Nature and Level of Work

To operate, maintain and repair all types of farm machinery, including farm tractors, balers, pruners, sprayers, cotton pickers, corn pickers, and specialized farm and research machinery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, adjust and operate all types of machinery as listed above. Weld broken or cracked parts of machinery, build worn part with welder, and modify equipment to fulfill specialized functions.

  • Mix chemicals and spray orchards, vineyards, special horticultural crops, and other agricultural areas. Drive tractor with chemical tank attached; spray designated areas in accordance with vegetation.

  • Operate power pruners to prune common fruit and vine crops and to trim trees and shrubbery on University farms.

  • Operate tractor, lifts, scrapers and appropriate attachments to mow, plow, disc, harrow, fertilize, bale, cultivate, and otherwise till earth in fields, special plots and orchards and various projects around farm including cleaning brush.

  • May perform general maintenance of grounds and facilities such as erecting and mending fences, clearing fence rows, mowing grounds, clearing and burning brush and dead trees, painting buildings and equipment, etc.

  • May supervise work crews assigned on a temporary basis in a variety of agricultural maintenance and repair tasks.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision is received from a designated supervisor.

Supervision Exercised

Supervision is not normally exercised by this position.

Qualifications

  • Eighth grade or equivalent; demonstrated skills may offset requirements.

  • Three years of experience in farm work including one year experience in farm equipment operations is necessary.

  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
