Operate, maintain, overhaul, and repair large trucks, farm trucks, heavy equipment, tractors, and other equipment utilized in a wide range of farm or earth moving projects. While some duties closely approximate those assigned to an Agriculture Heavy Equipment Operator/Mechanic, employees of this class typically spend a smaller percentage of time in the operation of equipment and are not expected to exercise as much independence of action in carrying out the more difficult projects.
Operate a variety of trucks (tractor-trailer rigs, grain trucks, hay trucks, dump trucks, flat-bed trucks, etc.) for both local and over-the-road hauling of feed, seed, hay, harvested crops, fertilizer, dirt, heavy earth moving farm equipment, livestock, and other farm supplies.
Operate farm tractors with appropriate attachments to mow, plow, disc, harrow, fertilize, cultivate, and otherwise till earth in fields, special plots, and orchards.
May operate one or more pieces of equipment, such as a bulldozer, grader, earth-mover, etc. to perform various earth moving tasks on University farms and related agricultural research units. Knock down brush and trees; pile brush and debris; fill ditches; dig trenches; make and repair ponds; do drainage work; perform rough grading in the construction of roads and preparation of ground; terrace fields; level area for construction projects; and move dirt as directed.
Maintain and service assigned equipment: fuel, lubricate, change oil, change attachments, clean, paint, replace oil filters, replace air filters, and otherwise care for equipment.
Perform routine repairs, tune-ups and overhauls of heavy equipment and general farm equipment. Disassemble, clean and replace defective parts, and reassemble as necessary
May supervise work crews assigned on a temporary basis in a variety of agricultural maintenance and repair tasks.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision is received from a designated supervisor.
Supervision is not normally exercised by this position.
High school diploma or equivalent; demonstrated skills may offset requirements.
Three years of experience in the operation and maintenance of large trucks, heavy tractors, bulldozers or similar pieces of farm machinery is necessary.
A valid driver's license is necessary.
A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required for some positions. Class A license with airbrake endorsement may be required.
A fertilizer operator's license may be required for some positions, within six months.
