Provide advanced animal husbandry and technical skills to assist the professional staff with animal procedures utilized in biomedical research. Review of work performed is primarily accomplished through observations of general effectiveness.
Provide husbandry and care to animals in conventional and specialized housing. Observes and reports changes in health status or condition of animals. Ensures that animals and cages are labeled appropriately.
Assist research staff and co-workers in performing technical procedures.
Prepare and maintain the sterile instruments/equipment used in animal surgeries.
Maintain breeding colonies.
Maintain animal medical and surgical records. Receive, identify and issue selected animal species.
May direct or assist in training animal caretakers or technicians.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work is performed under the general supervision of Chief Laboratory Animal Technologist and/or veterinary staff with oral and written instructions given as needed.
May direct or assist in training animal care workers or technicians.
High school graduate or equivalent.
If not certified as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) at time of employment, employee is required to test for LAT certification within six months of employment in this title. If not successful in passing first test, employee must pass LAT certification within the next available test offering or be terminated.
Consistent with the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) qualifications listed for Laboratory Animal Technician: three years of experience in a laboratory animal facility or at least one year of experience in a lab animal facility with remaining two years equaling a combination of post-secondary course work and experience.
