Nature and Level of Work

Perform skilled work on a journey level in the installation, maintenance, service and repair of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures. All work is subject to spot-checking and inspection for conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade. Primary responsibility working at off-campus areas often at remote locations throughout Missouri where installation and repair of utility systems from source to final use will encompass skills required from a variety of trades. Confer with research station managers off-campus and serve as the interface between the university and utility distribution companies to achieve agreements for work that is planned.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate projects with other trades people and utility companies with functional contacts with co-workers, other service department employees, administrative staff at the home office and out- of-state locations, students, university staff and building occupants. Plan day-to-day activities, work assignments, time of work and coordination of the projects. Seek approval from the director before projects are undertaken.

  • Install, maintain, and repair AC and DC electrical wiring systems, power sources, laboratory equipment, and other components such as conduit, electrical panels, signal and alarm systems, lighting, receptacles, relays and controls, motors, generators, rectifiers, transformers, electric meters, etc. (not high voltage) May replace interior and exterior lamps as necessary at varying heights. Plumb water lines and on-site sewage systems or liquid propane and natural gas systems that connect sewers to municipalities. May require knowledge of and perform general carpentry. Install, maintain and repair overhead and underground electrical circuits and components. May oil, clean, replace brushes and perform other equipment repairs. May install, maintain, and repair circuits and equipment involving electronic components. Troubleshoot equipment, utilizing testing devices.

  • Clean, maintain, safely operate and properly store all tools and equipment.

  • Maintain inventory of essential repair parts on vehicle. Make purchases and quality selection of parts and components installed as well as the accounting of these parts and labor and mileage for complete projects.

  • May perform or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, material orders, reports and maintenance of records.

  • Observe and enforce all safety requirements related to equipment operation.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

Direct supervision is received from a designated supervisor. Oral and written instructions are supplemented by plans, drawings or blueprints.

Supervision Exercised

May instruct and/or guide personnel assisting in work.

  • A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.

  • Five years actual work experience and training, including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training, in the trade.

  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical codes.

  • Skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade.

  • Ability on a daily basis to:

  • Grasp, lift, maneuver, rotate, and otherwise use small to large trades tools and equipment.

  • Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy objects (50-80 lbs.)

  • Grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, lift, and otherwise move equipment, controls, parts, etc.

  • Visually assess maintenance, construction and repair needs

  • Climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding

  • Commercial driver's license

  • Class B electrician's license

  • Class B plumbers license

  • Certification in air conditioning and refrigeration

  • Ability to operate full-size backhoes
