Nature and Level of Work

Operate various specialized equipment for the purpose of sorting incoming and outgoing mail, and/or processing large mailings. May provide direction and leadership to other employees while performing similar duties. Arrange for needed assistance from other shops on a particular job or work assignment and provide coordination for the work being performed. All work is subject to spot-checking and review for overall conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade. Functional contacts include co-workers, other department employees, and University staff, students, and the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, adjust, maintain and make operational/program adjustments to mailing equipment including mail inserters, labelers and sorters. Assist with minor equipment repair and replacement of parts.

  • May manually sort, insert and label mailings as needed.

  • May plan or assist in scheduling of work operations and assign tasks, train workers as necessary in the use of materials, equipment, methods, procedures and safety regulations. Initiate required action to resolve work problems and inspect work for conformance to accepted standards.

  • May perform data cleaning by importing and standardizing customer data sets, validating with National Change of Address (NCOA). Presort for UPS. Notify customers of undeliverable addresses.

  • May assist customers with design, scheduling and processing of mail jobs.

  • May be required to maintain current knowledge of USPS regulations and related inquiries.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

Administrative supervision is received from a designated supervisor.

Supervision Exercised

Functional supervision may be exercised over clerks and mail processors.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.

  • Six months experience with general mail processing equipment and procedures.

  • Prefer two years of experience in in Bulk Mail functions and mail processing equipment, programs, and procedures.

  • Computer experience.

  • Good typing skills are preferred.
