Perform general maintenance to repair and maintain equipment in the power and chilled water production plants, such as boilers, turbines, chillers, cooling towers, fuel handling systems, baghouses, ash handling equipment, piping systems, and all associated equipment. Repair and maintenance projects vary from routine preventative assignments, to projects requiring repair troubleshooting, measurement and adjustment, evaluation of parts needs, replacement or repair parts as needed. Job performance is evaluated by visual inspections for workmanship quality and functional operation following repair. The contacts for this position are: co-workers in utility production, utility production operations personnel, supervisors and management, other department skilled trades personnel, contractors, and supply vendors.
Complete inspections of all utility production mechanical equipment, determine necessary repairs, complete repairs as needed. May complete valve repair, steam/water pipe fitting, plumbing, painting, steam trap repair, instrumentation installation, and insulation work. Assist Utility Production Maintenance Specialist III's repair and installation of production equipment. Notify supervisor(s) of potential problems discovered during routine inspections and maintenance.
Safely, complete repair and maintenance of boilers and chilled water production equipment such as: inspecting and repairing chain grates, installing various refractory systems, repairing and repacking valves, rebuilding steam traps, cleaning and inspecting boiler fireside and water sides, auxiliary systems, repairing and replacing lagging and insulation, repairing water columns, replacing gaskets, checking dampers, inspecting fans, chillers, water boxes, towers, pumps, fans, strainers, and repairing other associated components as needed.
Safely, use and maintain in the normal daily job function tools and equipment including: various hand tools, grinders, drills, band and disk cutters, propane torch, acetylene torch, electric arc welder, electric arc plasma cutter, grit blasters, etc. May complete various welding methods on ferrous and non-ferrous metal components. Complete rigging and heavy lifting of various materials utilizing and operating chain/cable hoists, engine hoists, pallet jacks, forklifts, and small portable cranes.
Coordinate with utility production supervision and engineering on projects and maintenance; prepare material lists, review inventory needs, review schematics, construction drawings, and equipment manuals, and assist in maintaining utility production maintenance records.
Safely, assist in chiller, boiler and baghouse house operation typically during start-up. Help start- up boilers and chillers as assigned and bring to operating conditions. Help start equipment such as
pumps, booster fans, baghouse compartments, and bring equipment into or out of service. Operate valves as directed to isolate equipment.
Safely coordinate work with utility operations to maintain reliability of production equipment by following all plant safety practices. Normal work will be in areas of limited access, baghouse compartments, boiler fireboxes, water boxes, boiler drums, cooling towers, heights, extreme heat, fly ash, biomass and coal dust, and noise.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Administrative supervision is received from the utility production supervisors, typically receiving oral and or written directions from a utility production maintenance supervisor. Work assignments may be task or project oriented depending on need.
May occasionally instruct and guide other utility production personnel assisting in work.
A high school diploma or equivalency certificate.
Four years working experience of general mechanical nature in a heavy industrial environment, with preference given to utility production experience. Experience with maintenance of boilers, baghouses, turbines, chillers, cooling towers, pumping systems is desirable.
Must possess a valid Missouri driver's license.
Completion of all training requirements of Utility Production Maintenance Specialist I is required.
Skilled in the methods and practices of utility production and industrial maintenance and mechanical repair is required. Skilled in the use of industrial hand and power tools, oxy-acetylene torch, and lifting equipment, such as chain hoists, forklifts, and small cranes is required.
Electric arc welding skills desirable.
Good physical strength and physical coordination, with sufficient strength and stamina to do heavy lifting on a regular basis.
Capable of entering common boiler and baghouse access doors.
Physical health adequate for utility production environment.
