Statement regarding NAACP’s travel advisory

Dear University of Missouri System Family and Friends:

I was very disappointed to learn about the Missouri NAACP’s decision to issue a travel advisory for the State of Missouri. After reading the advisory, which includes a reference to the University of Missouri, I contacted the president of the Missouri NAACP to explain my perspective and describe the many initiatives underway at the University to promote a positive environment on our campuses. We had a constructive conversation, and we mutually agreed to continue the dialogue and to share new ideas to continue to improve our University. We all share a commitment to create a community that values the diversity of background, experiences, perspectives and thought. At the University of Missouri System (including MU, UMKC, S&T and UMSL campuses), my colleagues have made remarkable progress toward this objective. We invite everyone with an interest in the University to visit and experience for themselves the vibrant and inclusive community of learning, research and engagement that is at the heart and soul of our University.

I welcome your input to support our continued efforts to achieve our objectives.

Sincerely,

Mun Y. Choi, President
University of Missouri System
