Changes to retiree health insurance

You're on your path. What's your destination? 2018 changes to retiree health insurance may affect your decision to retire; we can help you chart your course.

   1.   Find where you fit

On January 1, 2018, the University will implement changes to how the University delivers and pays for retiree health insurance. These are the same changes approved by the Curators of the University of Missouri in April 2016; they affect all benefit-eligible employees with the exception of those who are age 60+ with 20+ years of service. Just how you're affected depends on your age and years of service. Find where you fit:

  2.   Know your options

Choosing when to retire is an individual decision. Make an informed choice by using these tools.

Attend seminars and one-on-ones
Understand your pension and retirement savings

Your pension is not affected by the changes to retiree health insurance. However, you may wish to understand your pension payout if you are considering retiring in 2017. Use these resources to help gather information customized to you.

If you choose to retire in 2017
  • Complete and submit your Notice of Intent to Retire (NOI) to your department.
  • Ensure your retirement date falls before changes to retiree health insurance eligibility take place. A new solution is now available to employees concerned that their unused, accrued vacation may push their retirement date into 2018. Employees choosing to retire in 2017 have the option to receive a lump-sum payment for accrued vacation. To do so, they must submit a vacation waiver form (PDF). For more information about the vacation waiver option, access the vacation waiver FAQs.
