Retiree health insurance eligibility

  1.   Find where you fit 

On January 1, 2018, changes to how the University delivers and pays for retiree health insurance were implemented. These are the same changes approved by the Curators of the University of Missouri in April 2016. Employees who retire on or after January 1, 2018, must meet the following requirements to be eligible for retiree health insurance:

  • Employed in a UM System benefit-eligible position on December 31, 2017; and
  • Reached at least five years of vesting service as of December 31, 2017; and
  • Reached at least 60 years old by retirement date; and
  • Accrued at least 20 years of creditable service to the UM System by retirement date.

Post-retirement health insurance benefits are not available January 1, 2018, or later to current benefit-eligible employees who do not attain at least five years of service as of December 31, 2017, and to all employees hired on or after January 1, 2018.

Employees who meet eligibility requirements for post-retirement health insurance benefits may only carry the plans into retirement in which they were enrolled immediately prior to retirement. Please note, the retiree health insurance benefits employees are eligible for depend upon the Access Category in which they were placed, which is based on their age and years of service.
